Background[edit]
Following the release of 'Me and Your Mama', Gambino released the song on November 17, 2016 premiering on Annie Mac's Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1, with the DJ describing it as 'oozing with soul'.[4][5]
Recording and production[edit]
'Redbone' was written by Donald Glover and produced by Ludwig Göransson. When Glover was doing an interview with Triple J about the album he said:
“ | There wasn't a ton of vocal stuff done ... I think people hear 'Redbone' and are like, 'Oh, he pitched up his vocals,' but there was no vocal pitching on the album—I just sang differently.[6] | ” |
Göransson recorded all the instruments starting out from a drum beat that Donald Glover was playing. The intro of the song is dominated by a recurrent slap bass line and the Maestro G-2 wah of a vintage Telecaster that plays the melody while a synth organ makes the counterpoint. An old Rhodes conduct the base chords in D minor as other instruments get in, like a clavinet, a mellotron, a glockenspiel and the Juno-106 synthesizer. The outro part ends with several fuzz guitar harmony licks, a doubled distorted acoustic guitar and some classic piano arrangements.[7] The melody used in the song was first heard in Jaco Pastorius' 'Portrait of Tracy'. The song also contains elements from 'I'd Rather Be with You' by Bootsy's Rubber Band.[8]
Commercial performance[edit]
'Redbone' was a sleeper hit in the United States, debuting at number 75 on Billboard Hot 100 for the chart dated December 10, 2016.[9] The song then re-entered and peaked at number 12 on the chart for the week of August 19, 2017,[10] making it Gambino's highest-charting single at the time (since surpassed by “This Is America”) and his first top 20 single. The song became Childish Gambino's first ever number-one single on the Adult R&B chart.
The track was voted into fifth place in Australian radio station Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2016.[11]
Usage in media[edit]
The 2017 film Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele, features the song during the film's opening scene.[12]
Since its re-entry to the Billboard charts, the song has become a popular internet meme consisting of various remixes of the song to fit a certain theme. During a concert in June 2017, Glover acknowledged the meme onstage before leading into a performance of the song.[13]
During the 2018 Grammy Awards, an Apple ad showing off iPhone X's Animoji effect aired, in which the song was used, with an animated alien head singing the song.[14]

- Lyrics of this song at MetroLyrics
Childish Gambino’s “Redbone,” the second single off of his Awaken, My Love! album, centers on the narrative of infidelity and paranoia. The track got a prominent placement in the opening moments of Jordan Peele’s record-breaking movie Get Out, too, leading to Platinum certification. Its instrumentation is a collaboration between Donald and Swedish composer and producer Ludwig Göransson; the two have frequently worked together since the 2010 Culdesac mixtape. He went to the studio not knowing what the two had in store that day.
“We were just chilling and then Donald started playing drums,” he tells Genius. “He was like, ‘I have this beat. Let’s just play this drum beat.’ We had all the instruments spread out in the whole room, in the whole studio, and just went from one to another to another, hearing ideas and basically just recording a bunch of tracks on top of each other. That was kind of the seed of the idea, that was sort of the first of ‘Redbone’ kind of started.”
Göransson recreated the bass line, percussion and sparkling glockenspiel live when Genius visited him at a Los Angeles studio to break down the beat for the latest episode of Genius' video series Deconstructed.
“There was a time before we started on that album where I started listening to—Donald sent me a bunch of Funkadelic’s albums,” he says. “I hadn’t really experienced Funkadelic, I was more kind of raised off of jazz and blues, I didn’t really experience that ‘70s psychedelic music, so it’s all very organic. Just how instruments sounded back then, I think that was just something we wanted to capture with our music.”

CeeLo Green has been uber-productive lately, and now’s your chance to hear his latest, a remix of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone”.
CeeLo Green is one of music’s most enigmatic characters, someone who is as likely to drop dozens of lyrics about his favorite MCs as he is to show up to the Grammys covered in gold. So when he sends you a text message of a new song at 2 a.m., you are not shocked — you are excited. That is how CeeLo’s remix of Childish Gambino’s infectious Redbone ended up at Digital Trends — and it’s now being shared with the world.
In the remix, Green replaces Gambino’s soulful, paranoid musings of staying awake with an arresting proclamation of love and devotion. It’s one of the rare remakes where you can hear how the original artist was influenced by the one remaking the song. The original — as well as the album on which it debuted, Awaken My Love -- shares similar musical DNA to Green’s 2010 soul album The Lady Killer, which spawned the international hit “Fuck You.”
Green’s remix may result in a more viscerally emotional delivery than the original, but the change in lyrics could have resulted in a different fate for the song. The original song by Childish Gambino, the stage name for actor Donald Glover, was featured in Jordan Peele’s blockbuster hit Get Out earlier this year. Peele says those cautionary lyrics, more than the music, is what got the song in the film. “Well, first of all, I love the ‘stay woke’ [lyric] — that’s what this movie is about,” Peele told HipHopDX.
@donaldglover moved me with this song and album. Thought I'd do a cool lil version of redbone for fun, but for real. #redbonepic.twitter.com/m7b0qD2H0s

Green has been regularly releasing music as of late, and his remix of Redbone is far from his first personal spin on a popular track. In February, he decided to pine for the affection of Beyoncé in Jay Z’s Girl a remake of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl.” Weeks earlier, he released Fuck Me, I’m Famous on iTunes, the first single from his new alter ego, Gnarly Davidson.
The venerable lyricist, who has held his own on songs with the likes of Outkast and many other artists, also made his return to hip-hop last July with My Favorite MCs, his first solo rap song in years. The 20-year music vet told Digital Trends last year that he’s simply “getting reacclimated to rap.”
